Lerwick's replacement fish market was commissioned by Lerwick Port Authority at a cost of £7.6 million, and provides more than double the capacity compared with the previous market.
The project to replace the Lerwick facility commenced in early 2013. The proposals were developed following detailed consultation with stakeholders, along with visits to fish markets across the UK, providing a thorough understanding of how to enhance the quality of fish landed and sold, with greater efficiency and reduced environmental impact. The location for the fish market alongside the new Mair's Quay and Mair's Pier was planned by the client, in consultation with Arch Henderson, to create a hub for the industry in the Holmsgarth area of Lerwick Harbour. The new location facilitates improved access both by sea; allowing landings in all tide conditions with a deeper quayside water depth; and by land for the onward transportation of fish. The site is adjacent to the L-shaped Mair’s Pier which provides a larger working area and sheltered landing berths for the fishing fleet. Modern welfare facilities for all market users are also included in the development, together with offices for support staff and for companies related to the industry.
The £7.6 million investment in the market was supported by the European Maritime and Fisheries Fund, Highlands and Islands Enterprise and the Bank of Scotland.
Four temperature-controlled/chilled bays extend to 1,600 square metres, more than doubling the available capacity compared to 726 square metres in the old market. The chilling system is both environmentally-friendly and energy-efficient. There is increased space for palletising fish and a 400 square metre chilled dispatch area.
Investment by Shetland Seafood Auctions in a new web-based electronic auction system will provide a more versatile online system for buyers, with a ‘live view’ auction hall.
Arch Henderson was responsible for the architectural design of the fish market as well as the structural, civil engineering and project management of the project. Construction was carried out by Tulloch Developments Ltd.
With the completion in June 2018 of the Peterhead fish market, and Scalloway fish market in February 2020, Arch Henderson is proud to have been responsible for the design and delivery of three important and significant developments supporting the Scottish fishing industry.
