A multi-award winning project to refurbish the Northern Ammunitioning Jetty at Glen Mallan on the shores of Loch Long in Scotland.
The Northern Ammunitioning Jetty at Glen Mallan on the shores of Loch Long in Scotland was refurbished between 2019 and 2021 to extend the design life of the existing facility by 50 years. The works were carried out by VolkerStevin under a design and build contract with Arch Henderson as the lead designer and also the Principal Designer under CDM regulations.
The project team has been recognised at three construction industry awards for their work. They won ‘Best Infrastructure Project’ at the Scottish Civil Engineering Awards 2021 and ‘Upgrade and Renewal Project’ at the British Construction Awards 2021. They were also finalists in Construction News Awards 2021 for ‘Best Large Project over £50 million.’
We carried out the detailed design of the new 135m long jetty which consisted of a reinforced concrete suspended deck supported on steel tubular piles. The piles were socketed in to rock using a combination of driving and drilling techniques. The deck soffit was formed using a series of precast beams and planks which were filled in using in-situ reinforced concrete. The jetty was designed to withstand mooring and berthing forces associated with the full British Naval Fleet including the Queen Elizabeth and Prince of Wales Aircraft Carriers. It also supports two pedestal cranes capable of handling all vessel cargo.
We also designed five mooring dolphins which were connected to the jetty via a series of steel walkways and intermediate support structures. The dolphins consisted of steel tubular raking piles supporting a pilecap formed of an outer precast shell filled with in-situ reinforced concrete. Each dolphin supported one or more quick release mooring hooks to allow mooring of all design vessels.
Four navigation aids were designed by Arch Henderson as part of the project. The navigation aids consisted of monopiles either socketed in to rock or driven in to alluvial sands. The navigation aid topsides; housing navigation lights, solar panels, and battery packs; were prefabricated off-site and fixed on to the lower monopiles using a grouted spigot piece.
